They turned the corner into their cul-de-sac, walking in comfortable silence.

“Feels like snow’s coming,” said Daniel at last.

Ronan lifted his chin, sniffed the air. “Yep. Makes me feel like denning up.”

Daniel laughed. “Sometimes that’s exactly what I want to do. I think I’ve got a recessive hibernation gene.”

Daniel could den up with Ronan anytime.

“I’ve got a refrigerator full of food,” Daniel said. “Why don’t you eat dinner with me?”

Just this once. Ronan would be rude if he refused another invitation.

A minute later they were doffing their boots in the little house’s entryway.

“How about something warm to drink first?”

“Sounds great.”

Ronan followed Daniel into the kitchen.

“I can make hot tea or chocolate.” Daniel opened a cabinet and peered inside. “Or something stronger. Irish coffee. I’ve got Bailey’s and Kahlua. Every kind of liquor known to man.”

“When the weather gets like this, what I really miss is my mum’s hot buttered rum,” Ronan said.

Daniel laughed.

Ronan tilted his head, puzzled.

“It’s your lucky day.”
